Lighter Capital funds Seattle ed tech startup Actively Learn

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

We welcome a local company Actively Learn to our growing client roster!

Headquartered in Seattle, Actively Learn was founded by Jay Goyal and Deep Sran in 2012 to help every student find joy and purpose in reading. The company provides an interactive reading platform that empowers educators to implement best practices for teaching and learning in every subject. Students are engaged, motivated and supported in curricular reading and given voice and choice for independent work.

In three years, Jay and Deep started generating revenue and gaining traction on their user base. Actively Learn currently has a 100% renewal rate. Over 750,000 students and teachers across the country have experienced the benefits of Actively Learn.

Prior to getting funding from Lighter Capital, Actively Learn received an SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grant from the National Science Foundation and a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

“As a tech company, we generally considered more traditional routes for getting financing,” says Jay Goyal, CEO and Founder of Actively Learn. “But then we learned about Lighter Capital, which fit our needs best. I really enjoyed working with the investment team there. They did not just try to sell Lighter, but instead educated me on various approaches we could take. Rebecca and Zach were very helpful and patient throughout the process.”

Actively Learn will use the funding from Lighter Capital to expand their growth and school partnerships team.
